Description of the genus
Rhizome erect, massive. Fronds 2-to 4- pinnate, veins free. Pinna costae without raised edges on the upper surfaces. Upper surface of the costae densely set with short multicellular hairs. Sori round; indusia kidney-shaped, bearing glands and hairs.
Derivation of name: mega: large, lastrea: referring to the fern genus 'Lastrea'; a large Lastrea.
Comment: Megalastrum is sometimes included in Ctenitis, we consider them to be 2 separated genera.
Worldwide: c. 30 species, neotropical distribution.
